About ELC

A growing body of research examines the links between early-life experiences and health, socioeconomic status, and well-being in later life. Research in this area includes the long-run effects of pre- and post-natal nutrition, early exposure to disease and poverty, differences in longevity by season of birth, mortality differences between migrants and natives, and the effects of childbearing and childrearing on post-reproductive mortality. This type of research requires both life history data and methodological sophistication. Longitudinal sources, such as the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, Health and Retirement Study, British birth cohort studies, and multi-generation historical databases provide exceptional opportunities in this area.

This network will facilitate coordination within this community and increase communication among researchers from different disciplines.

The activities proposed for this network include:

  • web-site and e-mail discussion list
  • development of on-line bibliography with user-supplied links to working papers
  • coordination/organization of sessions at conferences (such as PAA and IUSSP) to increase the visibility of this research
  • workshops and web-based seminars with leading researchers

The Early Life Conditions Network is a project of the Michigan Center on the Demography of Aging (MiCDA), which is sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (P30 AG012846).
